Kleenoil Trial - John Deere 9510 Engine
To measure improvement in oil cleanliness, samples were collected before and after installing a KU 50 Kleenoil Bypass Filter system on the engine of a John Deere 9510R tractor.
Before installing the Kleenoil system, the engine oil was changed at regular service intervals. During routine maintenance an oil sample was collected, and the solids contamination was measured using a Millipore test by passing the dirty oil through a 0.8 μm membrane filter (μm is micrometer, or one-thousandth of a millimeter. For reference, human hair is 20-200 μm wide). There was 390 engine hours on the oil, and the weight of contaminants measured 590 mg/L.
After a fresh oil change and the installation of the KU 50, oil samples were collected at 100, 233, 304, 500, and 750 engine hours. By 100 hours, much of the pre-existing contamination had been removed. Continued filtration further reduced solid contaminants and maintained the Total Base Number (TBN – a measure of the oil’s ability to neutralize corrosive acids) of the oil indicating there was no need to install new oil. After 750 hours – more than double the recommended maintenance interval – the oil’s ability to neutralize corrosive acids had finally dropped below the desired level. An oil change was completed, and a new filter cartridge was installed.
Another oil sample was taken after 250 hours on the fresh oil. It can clearly be seen that the Kleenoil Bypass filter has continued to improve the oil cleanliness and keeps removing contaminant as the engine runs.
The chart below shows how oil contamination decreased over time with the Kleenoil Bypass Filter system. After 750 hours of operation, the oil contained 6.5 times fewer contaminants than the sample taken after 390 hours of unfiltered operation. Oil cleanliness continued to improve after the subsequent oil change. After 1,000 hours of operation, the oil circulating in this engine was 11.5 times cleaner than the original unfiltered oil.
The reason for the decrease in contamination is because the Kleenoil Bypass Filter media is very dense and filters down to 3 microns absolute and 1 micron nominally. A regular full-flow oil filter averages around between 25 to 30 microns nominally.
